welcome to Redoubt

The vision for Redoubt Café & Wine Bar was born while enjoying friends on our Garrison porch. Often after football games, sledding down Winter Hill, or hiking up the Southern Redoubt trail watching the river flow past Storm King, West Point & Bear Mountain. Pulling corks, chasing kids & dogs, counting our blessings and making plans.

This led to our happily taking over the Garrison Café on St. Patrick’s Day, 2014. Our food is high quality, fairly priced and kindly served. The environment we created is welcoming, well-organized, comfortable, clean and friendly to all the types of customers we host. In the fall of 2016, we renovated the Café, launched a dinner menu and added a bar.

We at Redoubt thoughtfully select fine wine, always with a story, never stuffy, fairly priced, in the right glass and at the right temperature. Our menu features deliciously simple food served in portions to Taste, to Savor, or to Share. So look to us for everything from oysters to wood-fired pizza, tuna to steak, pasta to a great burger.

And as is customary in the Hudson Valley, you’re bound to see a friend or two walk in our door. The Redoubt aims to be our local gathering place to share one of life’s most civilized pleasures – Drinking good wine with good food in good company.

Lydia and Matthew McMahon, Proprietors

And many ask ... “What’s a Redoubt?”

A redoubt is a small fort, usually constructed from dirt, wood & stone. If you look out our front door across the street to Fort Hill, two redoubts - the Southern & Northern - can still be seen and hiked up to. They were built in 1778 as part of Gen. George Washington’s plan to control the Hudson River. The view from Fort Hill is stunning and inspirational.

Redout - Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards

July 2017 — Matt and Lydia McMahon are proud to announce that The Garrison Redoubt Cafe & Wine Bar is the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world.

Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards recognize restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, are appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers. These wine lists, which typically offer at least 90 selections, feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. Whether compact or extensive, focused or diverse, these lists deliver sufficient choice to satisfy discerning wine lovers. See the Garrison Redoubt Cafe & Wine Bar's listing at

My husband and I dined here recently and we were so impressed! The restaurant is very comfortable and designed well. The wine menu included about 10 wines available by the glass and many more available by the bottle. The menu is unique in that you can order any of the items in small, medium or large portions. We loved this because often we don't want a big meal, or would prefer to taste several different things! I got the eggplant parmesan and he got the crab cakes. Both were delicious! The owners were very friendly but also let us sit and talk for as long as we liked. A really nice addition to the area!

Excellent, everything was awesome wish I had room for more

Innovative portion-size options: Taste, Savor or Share. Creative menu - amazing food & wine list - great atmosphere! This is a welcome addition to the area. We loved the Tuna seared over wonton tostada, "Carpet Baggers" (fried oysters topped with steak tartare), Crab cakes, Kobe strip, and Patagonian salmon.. Highly recommended. Great for a date night, or a group of foodie friends.

Delicious wine, food and ambience.

My sister and I went to Redoubt on Saturday night. Had the tuna, scallops and eggplant. All were truly delicious. The service and wine were excellent too. So nice to have owners come over and introduce themselves. Will definitely come back and bring friends. A very local feel which for us was refreshing from NYC.

An amazing spot. Must stop for anyone coming upstate for a beautiful day hike - end the day with wonderful food and drink. What a wonderful way to experience the area. Also a great spot for anyone local, there's enough incredible food to keep you coming back.

The best scallops and eggplant parmesan I have ever had! Matt and Lydia make you feel like guests in their home with gracious hospitality and simple, elegant decor. I can't wait to go back...

Just did a small private birthday celebration there and Matt and Lydia (the owners) couldn't have been more attentive and gracious. Wonderful wine menu with a special "pairings" electronic program so you get the perfect combo with their food. Impressive little refuge for a good glass and a special little meal.

We are NYC folks. We eat out 3-4 times a week. Not to be a snob, but its usually tough when we leave the city to find food that is in the same league. That being said, when out and about, and hunger hits, sometimes it really just pays to follow your impulse (better yet, follow your "gut") in trying new spots to eat for dinner. My wife and I were recently on the road near Cold Spring coming back from Beacon and happened to see this modest looking very cool hang out on the side of the road. Something drew us in here as the sun was setting. We stopped, looked at the fare on the menu, met the owners, and were we gave it a shot. We were very gratified that we did. The attraction here, and the reason we will come back is not just to be found in the sophisticated & eclectic menu including seafood (great tuna) and beautiful Wagyu beef nor the painstakingly collected variety of very special wines by the glass and bottle; the reason we will be back is the service. The service is phenomenal. So the grades are Food: Excellent Wine:Subperb Service: High End. WE WILL BE BACK VERY SOON!

Recently ate dinner here. The food was amazing, I really had to control myself to not lick the plate after my scallops. The options for 3 sizes of plates is a pretty cool concept. You can Taste, Savor or Share! , No need to commit to a full entrée. My hubby and I sampled a few different dishes, The wine selection was pretty great too! It felt like the old days when we used to dine in NYC before kids. No need to travel this is right in our backyard. The staff was friendly and courteous.

A great restaurant deserves a great review! Had dinner with a group of friends last Friday evening and had the most wonderful time. The food was truly outstanding and the wine choices were pretty awesome. Matt & Lydia make you feel completely at home and certainly know how to deliver a great dining experience. There were 6 of us and because the menu offers the option to share dishes we were able to try quite a few different appetizers and entrees. My personal favorite was the Kobe strip, honestly the best steak I have had in years. I also really loved the Crab Cakes, Scallops and Bruschetta. Friends were raving about the Salmon and Sliders as well. There was a nice crowd at the bar, trying different wines and eating wood-fired pizza's. So much fun!!

Highly recommend. Fabulous menu - amazing food & wine list - great atmosphere! This is a welcome addition to the area. We loved the Tuna seared over wonton tostada, "Carpet Baggers: fried oysters topped with steak tartare, Crab cakes, Kobe strip, and Salmon patagonian. LOVE the portion-size options: Taste, Savor or Share

A local gem and by far my fav restaurant in the area! Intimate and relaxing with an exceptional menu and wine list. The food is outstanding!

Serene and sophisticated atmosphere, delicious food and kind service. I love the menu option for portion sizes so one can have a simple inexpensive dining experience or go all out. We will be returning often for sure. The drive to this location was also beautiful. BTW, the shrimp with avocado is to die for.
